We All Experience Stress:
Unfortunately, none of us are immune to stress. We all face difficult situations from time to time whether it be related to our job, finances, a significant life change or a global pandemic. Stress can have a significant negative effect on our health. The key is to recognize it and utilize effective coping mechanisms to help your body and mind better manage the stress to improve overall wellness.
Stress Wreaks Havoc on Your Body AND Your Mouth:
Stress can cause mild digestive discomfort, headaches, sleeplessness, irritability and more. Over time, and if left untreated, more serious illnesses can result such as diabetes and heart disease. Stress also poses detrimental risks to your oral health. It is one of the leading causes of bruxism, clenching/grinding of your teeth, which can lead to headaches, jaw pain and can wear your teeth down. Chronic stress can also cause canker sores or lead to gum disease due to a compromised immune system.
What can we do to Help Manage Stress?
Eating well and getting good sleep is crucial to a healthy immune system. Regular exercise is very effective as are relaxation techniques like yoga. With summer now upon us, it’s a great time to take your exercise regimes outdoors! Connecting with others, even if from a distance, can help manage stress and its symptoms. Consider a socially distanced picnic with friends or even a simple phone call for some good old fashioned conversation!
